Computer Security
As a home computer user accessing the Internet, whether through a broadband connection or traditional dial-up, you should try to protect your computer. Here are some programs to help you protect your computer. All computers should at least have an antivirus program. Another program I think is essential is a firewall. The third is an antispyware program. These are programs I have tried and find simple to use. Best of all they are free.
Antivirus
Avast doesn't schedule a scan and AVG Free scans everyday, which can be to much. Both seem to be excellent programs. Both versions come with antispyware and avast comes with antirootkit too.
avast! antivirus 4.x Home Edition
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
Firewalls
Sygate is simpler but it does have a lot of popup windows for a while. Sygate was bought by Norton and discontinued but can still be downloaded.
Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm free
Standalone Antispyware
A good way to double check your computer.
Ad-Aware Free - Anniversary Edition
Spybot - Search & Destroy
SUPERAntiSpyware
This is a program I found that helps remove fake virus popups that tell you that you got a virus then try to get you to buy a fake or bad antivirus program to get rid of it. There is a free version and a paid version.
SUPERAntiSpyware
Computer Repair
This is a zip file I put together for some of my friends and family that have had trouble with fake antivirus popups. It has SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, Sygate Personal Firewall, and direct links to start installing AVG or avast.
